Funny story about Ed and me as kids.  Just after Christmas in either 1958 or 1959, I got mad at my mom about something and told her I was running away.  I went out the side door of our home on Keppen Ave and walked one street over to Hanfor Ave where Ed's family lived.  (His parents, Ben and Adele Katroscik, owned a small restaurant close by on Allen Road near the intersection of Cicotte Ave.)  Ed had gotten a new train set for Christmas so we played with the train for a couple of hours.  By the time we were done playing, I had gotten over being mad and went home in time for dinner.

One other story from around the time Ed and I were in 5th grade when we both became altar boys at St Mary Magdalen Church -- Ed's older brother (Tom) and my older brother (Ron) were 8th graders, both born in 1948.  All four of us said we wanted to be priests when we grew up.  Tom made arrangements to set up an altar in their basement, and he already had some home-made priest vestments to say Mass.  So we "played Mass" with Tom as the priest and Ed, Ron, and me as the altar boys.  We had flattened out bread cut in circles as Communion hosts.  Tom and Ron went on to attend and graduate from Sacred Heart minor Seminary High School in Detroit while Ed and I went to Redeemer.  In the end, none of us became priests!

Dear Patrice

(Gavin) Katroscik

May I speak for everyone... those of us from the neighborhood and fellow classmates. We are all deeply saddened by your and our great loss. Where does one start...to count all that goes into love, relationships and loss? But I'll start with the old cliche, "behind every good man, is a good woman!"

For truily Ed was a unique character. A happy go lucky charismatic indivdual...the kind the sweet Lord wants us all to become. To become the loving diverse unique individual we are created to be.  And the secret is in couples that let their partner be themselves florish and grow.

And Patrice you did that for Ed. Seeing him at the class reunion said it all. That's Ed!

Most of us are conformers. We fit in with the masses, with all the other affluent suburbanites. Not Ed and not Patrice. You two incorporated the meaning of loving couple in partnership and compainship for one another. This is where the burden of such a great loss comes now.

Patrice, know you don't carry the cross alone...we are with you in our thoughts, prayers and remembrances of a love well lived!

From all of us on Christiancy, Cavalry, Campbell, Porter and Eldred Streets and the Class of "69" we send our "Love" to you and your and Ed's families. Our faith has gotten us this far, our faith will see us through!
